Teddy made a friend at the local book store, I added a few new mugs to the gallery, have a new small batch of mugs in progress on their way to the kiln, and I thought I’d share a peek at my photography setup.
Glaze test and new mugs in progress
Latest mug in Teadust Black [4Y6-0CG]
This is the last of a batch of mugs I had made in 2020 but hadn’t gotten around to glazing. The inside of the mug is lined with a Glossy White and the outside was dipped in Teadust Black.
This glaze is heavy in iron content and results in a deep glossy black with metallic specks when laid on thick against bare clay. The color turns a rust red where it thins out around edges, as seen on the handle. The overlap between the Teadust and Glossy White glaze produces a tortoiseshell-like pattern and color due to the glazes having different herbs and spices from each other and subsequent melting characteristics. Crazy stuff happens at 2,000 °F.

Softbox lights are best lights
This is how I’m shooting most the pottery gallery photos on this site. I experimented with a few different types of LED strip lights and bulbs but ultimately ended up just picking up softbox lights with big CFLs. The backdrop is a big sheet of white paper.
I use a Panasonic G85 DSLR for the booth shots and my iPhone X for just about everything else at the moment.
